Sunday morning Chirs and I left Irvine at 5:00 am and headed up to Woodward for the Cal State DH race. I believe this would be Woodward’s first DH race. Kind of a test to see if it is worth their while to allow this type of event again.
The directions were good getting there, except I didn’t realize that the race was at the Lodge. Luckily a good Samaritan set Chirs and I on the right path from the hangars.
We arrived at the Lodge at 7:30 am and were just able to get one of the last parking spots. There was also parking along Augusta at the bottom of the course.
It was a relief to see that SRC was running the event:

Registration was the same as it is at Fontucky, so no trouble there. Of course I left my plate in my garage, so I got to run a paper plate with my usual 322P. Poor Chirs forgot his gloves, but we found plenty of folks with spares.
My first impression was “wow, nice scenery.” Temps today would be perfect. The dirt was moist and tacky in the morning and bone dry by the last run. It was also nice that the start was up at the lodge. This meant that you do your run, then get shuttled back up to the top. This also meant the competitors could see more of the race because everyone was already up top.
Those that were there on Saturday said they got as many as 20 practice runs in with short wait times for the shuttle. It sounds like getting a room at the Lodge Saturday night is the thing to do next time. I heard there was lots of fun to be had in the hangar. Plus, don’t loose your phone in the foam pit. No one can hear your ringer…lol!
The only negative thing I heard was that the course was too short. The Pro’s were posting sub 1 minute times. (Both my times were 1:19 good enough for 7th in my Sport class.) To me it was like racing down a dual slalom course. I really enjoyed it. The shortness of the course didn’t bother me since it was a two run format. Plus, no wall!!!
Here is a look at the course from top to bottom:

That’s it for now. More railing the berms pics to come in the future.
Traffic going home wasn’t bad at all. We got back to Irvine at 7:30 pm. The drive home could have been way worse.
