    2008 Cape Epic

    Hey Everyone,

Some of you might already know this but Megan and Anka are competing in the 2008 Cape Epic in South Africa. The Absa Cape Epic takes place every year around the last week of March and the first week of April. It starts in the beautiful Garden Route town of Knysna and finishes nine days later in style at the grand Lourensford Wine Estate, just outside Cape Town. The route changes every year, and leads aspiring amateur and professional mountain bikers from around the world through approximately 900 kilometers of the unspoiled nature of the Western Cape and up approximately 16 000m of climbing over some of the most magnificent passes in South Africa. For the first time the 2008 race will start with a time trial prologue on Friday in Knysna. Here are the stage updates from Megan. Click here for more information on the Cape Epic.

    Stage 1: Knysna - George
    Start: Knysna Waterfront
Finish: Saasveld Campus Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
    Distance: 123km
    Climbing: 3091m
Once again a traditional start sees riders leave the beautiful coastal town of Knysna, up Simola Pass, a 3km climb with a 7% gradient. But this is only the first of many climbs. Riders then turn into the lush, indigenous forests. This route is as beautiful as it is demanding, with sharp climbs, slippery corners and heart-in-the-stomach descents through Homtini, Jubilee Creek nature reserve, and a technical descent through Katara forest. Riders then get onto stretches of the 7 passes route, with some deviations to tackle more rugged terrain, before reaching their first race village on the beautiful Saasveld Campus.

    Dear Doug,

For Stage 1 of the Absa Cape Epic, the 1 200 riders had to make the journey of 123km from Knysna to George, with the South African MTN Energade team Kevin Evans and David George leading the way after their prologue win on Friday (which also took place in Knysna). The first leg of the 8-stage race challenged the aspiring amateurs and pro riders from around the world with a total climb of 3 091m.

Megan Hilliard achieved the following results:

    Stage Time : 8:04.40,9
Stage Position : 17. in Ladies category and 342. in general classification
    Overall Time : 8:57.27,1
Overall Position : 17. in Ladies category and in 350. general classification

    Re: 2008 Cape Epic

    Stage 2: George - Calitzdorp
Start: Saasveld Campus Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University
    Finish: Calitzdorp Spa
    Distance: 137km
    Climbing:
    2518m
Stage 2 is arguably the hardest stage in the history of the Absa Cape Epic. The first big challenge of today is the Montague pass, 10km long with an altitude gain of almost 600metres. The next 65 km are relatively flat and fast flowing, with some loose tracks through Chandelier Game Reserve. The big challenge awaits at 102km – the assault of Gamkaberg, one of the many Cape Nature properties, but better described as 'Break-Back Mountain'! Cut-off time at water point 3 is 15h00 and riders who don't make this cut-off will be swept! What awaits is an extremely tough, 10km rocky climb, ascending 650 metres with 2 false peaks at the end. Take a moment to enjoy the majestic scenery. At speed it’s a 90min climb up to 1100m, midfielders and backenders need to prepare themselves for 2 hours plus. The high-stakes descent on the other side is scarier than the uphill and riders need to take caution! The last 15km to the Calitzdorp Spa are flat and fast and backenders will be racing to make the cut-off which will be extended to 18h00 on today’s stage!

    Dear Doug,

For Stage 2, Absa Cape Epic riders travelled from George to Calitzdorp, a 137 km journey with 2 518m of climbing. The route took riders through a very hot Karoo (39°C) and up the toughest climbs. The first challenge of the day was Montagu Pass, with dirt roads winding 9km up an 8% average gradient through the spectacular mountains and valleys. After some loose, rolling tracks through Chandelier Game Reserve came the Gamkaberg killer – Breakback Mountain. The climb reached 1 100m in altitude with the steepest gradients at 18%. It was a technical climb and riders lost some traction with loose rocks in the path. The high-stakes descent with sharp rocks and hairpin bends made it scarier than the uphill. The last 15km to the Calitzdorp Spa was flat and fast, but still gruelling as temperatures soared and wind conditions made it worse.

Megan Hilliard achieved the following results:

    Stage Time : 9:00.20,2
Stage Position : 17. in Ladies category and 342. in general classification
    Overall Time : 17:57.47,3
Overall Position : 17. in Ladies category and in 341. general classification

    Re: 2008 Cape Epic

    Stage 3: Calitzdorp - Riversdale
    Start: Calitzdorp Spa
    Finish: Langenhoven High School
    Distance: 133km
    Climbing: 2340m

With the painful memories of days 1 and 2 haunting their legs, riders are taken up a 13km steady drag up smooth dirt roads over Rooibergpass, gaining 600m of altitude, before a 70km/h descent into the valley. After some sharp rolling hills riders cross game country, where antelope, giraffe, leopard and caracal will watch the riders charge through. The terrain is tough. The rock formations are geologically fascinating as they are race threatening - if riders make a bad tire choice. Even after riders survive the punctures and the heat there is still a long slog on dirt road before the tarred Garcias pass takes the riders into Riversdale, for a hard-earned rest.

    Dear Doug,

Stage 3 of the Absa Cape Epic saw riders complete their stage journey from Calitzdorp to Riversdale, with a distance of 133km and climbing of 2 340m. Of the 1198 riders who left Knysna on Saturday, 1112 were still in the race this morning. 15 riders were competing with a blue number board, meaning they can still ride the Absa Cape Epic, but can’t compete for overall results, because they haven’t completed one of the stages.

The teams were taken up a 13 km steady drag on smooth dirt roads over Rooiberg Pass. It was a long climb that steepened to 9% before a 70kph decent into the valley. After some sharp, rolling hills, riders crossed game country, where antelope, giraffe, leopard, and caracal watched the riders charge through. From there on the terrain was tough. Maximum concentration was needed to preserve bike and body. The rock formations were as geologically fascinating as they were race threatening (should riders have chosen a bad line or made a bad tyre choice). Even after riders survived the punctures and the heat, there was still a long slog on dirt roads before Garcia Pass. They welcomed the tarred, gentle climb and fast descent that took them into Riversdale, for a hard-earned rest.

Megan Hilliard achieved the following results:

    Stage Time : 7:42.28,8
Stage Position : 17. in Ladies category and 363. in general classification
    Overall Time : 25:40.16,1
Overall Position : 17. in Ladies category and in 342. general classification

    Re: 2008 Cape Epic

    Stage 4: Riversdale – Swellendam
    Start: Langenhoven High School
    Finish: Swellendam Primary School
    Distance: 121km
    Climbing: 2620m
The rolling hills through the farmlands will give the power riders a chance to ply their trade. Then come the big ones - 'Heartbreak One' (2.2km at 6%) and 'Heartbreak Two' (4.5 km at 7%). Riders pass through dairy country before heading into Grootvaderbosch and back into some lush forests again – a welcome shelter from the harsh sun. But there are more challenges to come - more climbing, technical descents and river crossings. A short tar section passes the historical mission village of Suurbraak – a town that is no stranger to the Absa Cape Epic and a festive water point with access for spectators. When the riders cross a weir it’s only 12km to home. But don’t be fooled. Watch out for the short climbs that steepen up to 14%, it takes longer than you’d expect to get into Swellendam.

    Dear Doug,

For Stage 4 of the Absa Cape Epic (Riversdale to Swellendam), the rolling hills through the farmlands provided the power riders with a chance to ply their trade. Then came the big ones – heartbreak one and heartbreak two, the second of which was 4.5km long with a 7% gradient. After two days in the Karoo, riders passed through dairy country before heading into Grootvadersbosch, another Cape Nature jewel, and back into some lush forests again – a welcome shelter from the harsh sun, or so thought. In actual fact, the forest was hot and humid and did not provide the expected shelter. There were more challenges to come – more climbing, technical descents and river crossings, which were passable only by foot, or on a mountain bike. A short tar section passed the historical mission village of Suurbraak – a town that is no stranger to the Absa Cape Epic. At the weir crossing, it was “only” 12km home, which must have felt like 25km. Riders had to watch out for the mean, technical forest climbs that steepened up to 15%. It took longer than they expected to get into Swellendam.

Megan Hilliard achieved the following results:

    Stage Time : 7:54.01,8
Stage Position : 15. in Ladies category and 288. in general classification
    Overall Time : 33:34.17,9
Overall Position : 16. in Ladies category and in 314. general classification

    Re: 2008 Cape Epic

    Stage 5: Swellendam – Bredasdorp
    Start: Swellendam Primary School
    Finish: Bredasdorp Municipal Sport Grounds
    Distance: 146km
    Climbing: 1819km

Just when it looks like an easy day on the smooth dirt roads, riders turn into about 20km of rough dual tracks of De Hoop Nature Reserve where rocks and sand kill their momentum and their legs. But it’s worth it – riders get a magnificent reward – first class ocean vistsa as they crest the hills. Thorns and sharp rocks make tubeless tires highly recommended. This is a protected area forming part of the Cape Floral Kindgom. The reserve has 86 mammal species. Most notable are the rare bontebok and Cape mountain zebra, as well as eland, grey rhebuck, baboon, yellow mongoose, caracal and the occasional leopard. After the relative flatness riders face a steep tar climb out of the reserve, before heading back onto rugged terrain and an exhilarating downhill section. Then comes the long section across the windy plains and farmlands into Bredasdorp, so best find yourself a bunch and work together. The cut-off for this stage, which is the longest in the history of the Absa Cape Epic, has been extended to 18h00.

    Dear Doug,

For Stage 5 of the Absa Cape Epic, the route had riders make the journey from Swellendam to Bredasdorp (146km, 1 819m climbing). While it might have looked like an easy day on the smooth dirt roads, riders had to turn into about 20km of rough dual tracks of De Hoop Nature Reserve where rocks and deep sand killed their momentum and their legs. As this time of year is usually a dry season, the sandy tracks were deeper and longer. Many were frustrated with having to get off and push. But it was finally worth it – riders got a magnificent reward – another ocean vista opened out in front of them as they crested the last hill. Thorns and sharp rocks posed the challenge of keeping air in the tyres again. This protected area was alive with flora and fauna with proteas, baboons, ostriches, eland, steenbok and Cape mountain zebra. But riders focused on getting home across the windy plains and farmlands into Bredasdorp.

Megan Hilliard achieved the following results:

    Stage Time : 9:11.44,5
Stage Position : 15. in Ladies category and 350. in general classification
    Overall Time : 42:46.02,4
Overall Position : 15. in Ladies category and in 316. general classification

    Re: 2008 Cape Epic

    Stage 6: Bredasdorp – Hermanus
    Start: Bredasdorp Municipal Sport Grounds
    Finish: Hermanus Old Harbour
    Distance: 130km
    Climbing: 2095m

The start out of Bredasdorp sees fast gravel roads through the surrounding farmland. The big challenge but also the highlight of today is Salmonsdam Nature Reserve. It’s a 14km ascent from around 6% to 12% on rugged jeep track, winding its way through mountain fynbos. The views along the way, as well as the drop down towards the vineyards, are worth every effort. But the finish is still a long way away. And it’s not flat: the dirt roads quickly narrow and the riders will be hurting on the short sharp rises that kick up steeply before reaching Standord. The route is heading for the sea with a short beach section on hard sand, crossing the Kleinrivier river mouth before reaching the finish right in the heart of Hermanus.

    Dear Doug,

For Stage 6, Absa Cape Epic participants travelled from Bredasdorp to Hermanus (130km, 2 095m climbing). The start out in Bredasdorp offered fast gravel roads through the surrounding farmland. A rugged warm-up climb followed by a loose descent got riders ready for the day’s big challenge: Salmonsdam Nature Reserve. It was a 14km ascent from around 6% to 12% on rugged jeep track, winding its way through mountain fynbos. The views along the way, as well as the loose and rocky drop down towards the vineyards, made it worth the effort. But the finish line was still far away. A short stretch on tar gave riders a welcome rest before dirt roads and farm tracks headed for the sea. A quick nip over the dunes took riders into the shores of Walker Bay to cross the Stanford River mouth – a knee-deep wade before they reached the spectacular finish at the Old Hermanus Harbour.

Megan Hilliard achieved the following results:

    Stage Time : 8:49.58,6
Stage Position : 14. in Ladies category and 370. in general classification
    Overall Time : 51:36.01,0
Overall Position : 14. in Ladies category and in 318. general classification

Stage 7: Hermanus – Oak Valley / Elgin
    Start: Hermanus Old Harbour
    Finish: Oak Valley (NEW)
    Distance: 91km
    Climbing: 1985m

The last two stages are the shortest, but they are not easy! Almost immediately riders are faced with the steep tar ascent up rotary drive, granting riders scenic views back over the seaside town of Hermanus and Walker Bay. The route descends through Hamilton Russel and heads for Babilonstoring Nature Reserve, where sandy and rocky jeep tracks await. After crossing the R44 the next challenge awaits – a loose rocky climb gaining 500m in altitude up to Lebanon Nature Reserve. Then it is singletrack time through the Lebanon Trails. A quick dip under the N2 takes riders to some more fast-flowing singletrack on Paul Cluver Estate. Then riders wind their way up and down steep vineyards to their overnight stop at Oak Valley.

    Dear Doug,

For Stage 7 of this year's Absa Cape Epic riders enjoyed a shorter route from Hermanus to Grabouw, but it was definitely not easy! Covering 91km and 1 984m of climbing, participants immediately faced the steep tar ascent up Rotary Drive, which granted riders scenic views back over the seaside town of Hermanus and Walker Bay. The route descended through Hamilton Russel and headed for Babilonstoring Nature Reserve, navigating the sandy and rocky jeep tracks. After crossing the R44, the next challenge waited - a loose climb which gained 500m in altitude up to Lebanon Nature Reserve. Then it was single-track time through the Lebanon forest! A quick dip under the N2 took riders to some more fast-flowing single-track. Then the Absa Cape Epic teams had to find their way up and down steep vineyards for their overnight location at Elgin (Grabouw).

Megan Hilliard achieved the following results:

    Stage Time : 6:51.48,0
Stage Position : 13. in Ladies category and 320. in general classification
    Overall Time : 58:27.49,0
Overall Position : 14. in Ladies category and in 311. general classification

    Re: 2008 Cape Epic

Stage 8: Oak Valley / Elgin – Lourensford
    Start: Oak Valley
    Finish: Lourensford
    Distance: 68km
    Climbing: 1760m
Through the vineyards there are more short, jagged climbs. Then come the long steep climbs at Nuweberg. A fast descent takes riders to the Eikenhof Dam and the flat(ish) section to Gamtou Pass. Here, riders will be forced to portage their bikes for about a kilometre down slippery rocks that still bear the marks of the Voortrekker wagon wheels, not for their safety, but because the Gamtou pass is a national heritage site and special permission has been given to descend this historic track. After dropping onto the railway line for a fun, bumpy few kilometres, riders are entering the wine country and finally finish at the magnificent Lourensford Wine Estate.

    Dear Doug,

For the final stage of the 2008 Absa Cape Epic presented by adidas, riders enjoyed a stage half the length of the longest one, but the climbs were amongst the steepest. Through the vineyards and orchards of Oak Valley there were several short, jagged hills. Then came the long, steep climbs over Nuweberg, which forced many of the riders into their ‘granny gear’. As slow as they had to ride up, the opposite was true of the next downhill sections. Hair-raising descents forced riders to stay alert in order to avoid a tragic exit to the race at such a late stage. This took them to the flat section nearing the bottom of Gamtou Pass where, like last year, they had a compulsory portage section through this National Heritage Site. The Absa Cape Epic participants followed in the Voortrekkers’ footsteps down to the railway line, through more vineyards taking them to the finish line at Lourensford.

Megan Hilliard achieved the following results:

    Stage Time : 4:46.32,7
Stage Position : 10. in Ladies category and 291. in general classification
    Overall Time : 63:14.21,7
Overall Position : 14. in Ladies category and in 306. general classification
